It would be nice if Sumo could report the actual version.
Kyle_Katarn 2009-11-09 13:26 Does drag'n'drop work for these DLL ?
armin 2009-11-09 22:43 Well, at least it is working partially. "ssleay32.dll" can be dragged manually. The other two DLLs are ignored. Scanning automatically doesn't work either.

Kyle_Katarn 2009-11-10 19:59 OK this probably means other Dll do not have appropriate versionning info.

If SUMo can't load an application because it's currently running, that's maybe an important software to know for SUMo if there's an update available.

1) The path.

2) The file config.values in the .exe path contains the full version number.

Hope this helps...

988 New Feature feature N/A 2009-03-22 19:43 2009-03-24 19:42 hydrurga normal closed none none 2.4.4 no change required 0 Suggestions I have tested SUMo and am impressed by the *cooperative* approach to software version monitoring - given non-standard methods for tagging software with version info, and the sheer amount of software involved, it seems the best way to do things.

However there are two weaknesses that need to be addressed.

(i) Software that isn't covered by SUMo because the executable does not include a version number (e.g. Audacity). I would suggest that in the first place, SUMo and its users contact the manufacturers of software that does not include version numbers and ask them to include these in the next versions. However I would *also* recommend that SUMo also allow users to *manually* enter executable file names and their corresponding version numbers. This has the possible disadvantage that people will enter incorrect info (we're all human after all) but should still work. If anybody reports an incorrect version number then we users could also have the ability to flag this as invalid on the website.

(ii) Because the system bases its software list on a search for executables, many "sub-programs" are flagged (such as the 5 extra sub-programs flagged by my Ad-Aware product). I suggest that SUMo maintains a database of these extraneous programs which can't be updated without updating the entire product. The database, which would be compiled from your own observations and user reports, would be part of the installed SUMo itself so that these files are ignored on scan. This will make the system more manageable and therefore, ultimately, more successful.

Cheers, Pete
Kyle_Katarn 2009-03-24 19:42 (i) : This has to be treated independantly for each project. I'm doing my best but i need to be backed by users.

(ii) : This is inherent to SUMo's architecture. I'll try to improve.

Thanks for feedback !

Initial Response:

Thank you for contacting Epson Support.

The program Epson Print CD is only available on the CD that comes with your Epson Product, to update the software you will need to purchase a replacement CD. Generally this option is not needed as the Epson Print CD program that comes on the CD is designed for that model printer and it would only be recommended to look at a replacement CD if you are having issues with the current version.

Follow up response:

Thank you for contacting Epson Support.

The Epson Print CD program allows you to put both images and text and able to select either as the foreground or the background, there is not much more than you can print to a CD/DVD. The later versions of Epson Print CD do not improve on this, as there is not much more that Epson can include with Print CD and is mainly just to make the software compatible with the latest Epson models.

Please note that you can save any images or text on the CD as a template that you can load onto the next CD/DVD, Epson would like to suggest that you load Epson Print CD and then clck on Help then go to Help Topics for further information on using Epson Print CD.

539 New Feature minor N/A 2008-04-03 03:45 2008-11-23 09:48 Zer0 Voltage Kyle_Katarn normal closed none none won't fix 0 Allow User Specified [Upper] Version Check Limits for Individual Applications This would be to allow a user to [optionally] specify for any individual applications what the maximum major version is that they want returned during a check.

So if they specify "2", they would only be notified of any available updates BELOW 3.x (meaning 0.x, 1.x, and 2.x).

Also allow for decimals, like "2.5" - in which case they would see anything up to 2.5.x but not any 2.6.x or higher updates.

A common example of where I see a benefit for this would be Microsoft Office. The 2003 version components report as 11.something and the 2007 version components report as 12.something. But if I have 2003 installed and I don't want to see 2007 as an update (like I do now), I would specify 11 as my maximum version - after which I would then only see Office 2003 updates.

So basically this would cover any case where someone might not be interested in a major version upgrade (or anything past some specific version upgrade), but still wants to monitor for any in-line and/or minor version upgrades (which is a common need).

Obviously you would also have to allow for 0.x versions if you do this - meaning 0 and 0.something must be considered valid choices (since many programs use 0.x versioning). But if a value below the currently installed version is entered, then don't allow it to be accepted.

And if you want, you could even extend this to OS component support. Have SUMo detect the installed OS and provide an option where, if selected, SUMo will not report upgrades available for any OS components from a later OS. Thus advanced users could monitor for program upgrades from hotfixes and service packs without getting false results from other newer OSes. Something like this could become especially beneficial in the long-term after the next (post-Vista) Windows OS comes out.

Thanks!
Kyle_Katarn 2008-04-03 20:14 Isn't this too "Power-user" oriented ?
Zer0 Voltage 2008-04-04 03:09 I don't personally think so. I would hardly call Microsoft Office users "power users" (to continue from my example above). Plus this would support people who don't want to check for specific major version upgrades but do want to for in-line version upgrades - like in cases where they would need to pay for a major version upgrade but can get in-line upgrades for free (which is certainly very common). This would also help compensate for cases where higher or different versions of something are only available for specific platforms (like my Symantec AntiVirus for XP vs. Vista example from elsewhere). Besides, it's not like anyone would be forced to use it. :) Programs tend to get more adopters when they support the flexibility for a full range of users too (novice to power) - and I think something like SUMo is more potentially useful to experienced and power users as well. True novices probably don't know enough to care about version upgrades and even more advanced novices will probably only ever use upgrade notifiers already built-in to their programs.
Kyle_Katarn 2008-04-04 19:46 Right.

Feature confirmed but "low priority" compared to other new features (sceduler, drivers support...)
Zer0 Voltage 2008-04-05 02:42 Of course. I fully expect you to decide on appropriate priorities for anything I or anyone else suggest and to schedule any development accordingly. :) That's why I normally just leave the severity selection at the default. ;) Thanks!

Zer0 Voltage 2008-04-01 01:10 There is a significant SUMo.exe CPU load issue I recently reported here:

http://kcsofts.dyndns.org/mantis/view.php?id=527 [^]

Could that be related to your problem? It would certainly seem like a logical possibility.

Are you running much else at the same time?

If this happens again, hit Ctrl+Alt+Esc to bring up the Task Manager quickly and see what's going on under the Processes tab. If anything else is [individually] taking up 20% CPU or more, I have seen major problems with SUMo responsiveness. And if that's the case, these issues are tied together. ;)

Of course, I suppose it can also be a network timeout issue. I know the "Get Update" pages are hosted with a dynamic DNS service - and that is certainly slower than anything static. Plus I assume the version check server is also in France. Are you a close network distance from there? Perhaps running a "tracert kcsofts.dyndns.org" would also be a useful test when this happens. See if you get any timeouts and/or very slow responses in the route path. I'd lean towards the CPU load issue being the cause though. :)

Tux 2008-04-01 06:37 I need to wait until it happens again, it seems... :)

But yours might be the problem, indeed.
Kyle_Katarn 2008-04-01 20:52 What's your HW config ?
Tux 2008-04-01 21:04 Which details do you need?

XPSP2, 1 GB RAM... 3 GHz P4
Kyle_Katarn 2008-04-01 21:06 Twice more powerful than my dev station ... strange !

Any antivir running ?
Tux 2008-04-01 21:10 Yes, avast! (v4.8, updating from 4.7 didn't fix it)... but I doubt it's on my config as SUMo v1.6 didn't have those problems.
Kyle_Katarn 2008-04-01 21:13 Using Avast too ...

I'll apply the Thread's priority patch in v1.7.1
Once it will be available, please tell me if the bug persists
Tux 2008-04-01 21:35 I'll watch out then... :)
Zer0 Voltage 2008-04-01 22:00 Funny, the workstation where I first observed the CPU load issue is also XP SP2 with 1 Gig Ram - but only a 2.8 GHz P4. So close... :)

In my case, I'm running Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 (which is horrible if you're curious) for AV.

Having thought more about this, I'm almost certain it couldn't be network related. If it ever really took SUMo 30 seconds to check on any app, it would fail with a "Server Error. Please retry later." message. I know this for certain because I've seen that happen with a far shorter timeout than 30 seconds. :) Based on my testing, it aborts almost immediately on a server connect failure.

My guess is that because of the CPU load you're just not seeing SUMo progress because the desktop is so overloaded you're not getting proper GUI refreshes - but because SUMo grabs priority it is actually still processing successfully in the background without you seeing the interface updates.

Of course, until it happens again and you pull up the process list, I can't be 100% sure.
Kyle_Katarn 2008-04-02 20:09 You're probably right.

As far as I can remember, Java installers always install the new version alongside the old one, so you have to manually uninstall the old version (unless using some kind of 3rd party installer, I think there's at least one of those).
So make sure you indeed have just one version of Java installed.

The product version can be retrieved from a text file (build.dat) located in the program folder along with all the executables.
I know that in the past there have been cases in which the application built-in updater will not update to a newer version, and you had to do it manually (by design, not due to a bug), so it might be useful.
However, since the current method looks like it's working pretty much OK, the feature isn't urgent.

Since the database of Sumo is really big (which is a great feature anyway),
I would think it would be great if users could someway border the database in some way,
without having to put 99% of the list into the ignore list.

So what I would like to see is :

* Consider the people who want only check for new versions for some (for example 6) programs they use regularly
and which they want to keep an eye for them being updated.

So, i would like to request if this is possible.

1) After the normal scan, people delete all the stuff they are happy with and they aren't really interested in an update for it, for example stable, good working hardware drivers, and some software.

2) So people delete almost everything from the list, and only keep, say 10 programs they want to check for updates regularly.

3) With only those programs they're really interested updating on the list left, they could for example do File/Save as my selection.

4) An option, which automatically loads this selection on startup, so they can easily check for updates for only these few programs they chose. (Option which could be set in the Options/Settings window.

I hope everything is clear now, and I hope you could include this suggestion in some upcoming version.

Greetings,

        G.Schepens.

575 New Feature minor N/A 2008-06-02 04:34 2008-08-08 11:25 Zer0 Voltage Kyle_Katarn normal closed none none won't fix 0 Support Resuming from the Point of any Check Failure or Manual Stop Having to completely restart from the beginning after a check failure or stop is highly annoying if, like with me, there are hundreds of programs in the list. If SUMo aborts at 900-something out of 1000, I'd rather not have to start over again at 1. Instead, just have it pick up later from where it left off. This would be especially beneficial in cases where there is some [temporary] server connection issue.

Naturally, once you release the planned version with support for saving check results, it should also be able to save the point at which a check experiences any connection failure or is manually stopped. That way users could even fully close SUMo and then restart it again anytime later and resume the check from where it stopped.

Once this support is available, I would also suggest that in cases where a check has failed or been stopped the "Check" button should temporarily change to say "Resume" instead - and then later change back to "Check" once a successful check fully completes.

Thanks!

hope this helps - I installed the latest driver again yesterday to check that it is not my fault and restartet and startet SUMo again but did not recognize the latest Version
Zer0 Voltage 2008-08-04 23:02 @fLasHed:

Check the path and file name for the "Tablet Service Deployer/Undeployer" entry in SUMo. Once you know it, browse to that file through Explorer, single right click on it, select Properties on the pull-up menu, and click on the Version tab of the file's properties once they appear.

My guess is that the "File version" field towards the top will say 5.0.1.8 - not 5.08 (or anything else).

If so, this is not uncommon. Many products show something different from their logical version number in their main version tag. It's up to the developers. Such products still work with SUMo, but the version numbers you see in SUMo don't necessarily match what you may see elsewhere.

As for the 5.0.3 and 5.0.5 version entries and the various 6.0.x version entries shown on the SUMo "Get Updates" page for it, this is also a common issue with drivers and hardware related utilities. Those conflicting numbers actually come from people using different Wacom hardware products or the same product on different platforms (like XP vs. Vista). This is because the driver names are the same (because they come from the same developer and company), but the version numbers are different.

For example, with the Bamboo, Windows XP users have driver version 5.08-6 while the latest Vista RC candidate is version 5.08-2. That means that XP users will report a higher version number to SUMo - and that means Vista users will see that higher version available as an update. But in actuality, it's not an update for Vista users - it's just a newer version for XP users that happens to have the same file name and info tags (except for the version number).

The version 6 entries, however, come from people using other Wacom products. For example, the Cintiq tablet users all have version 6.x drivers - but those drivers have the same name info. So when those users run SUMo, it sees the same name and company tags but a different version number value - so it gets marked as a newer version. But in reality, it's for completely different hardware. SUMo just can't tell because the developers don't create unique file tags and/or rename the drivers.

This happened to me with multiple hardware related tools. Like my old Canon scanner. The latest version of the software I can use is much lower than the versions available for other newer scanners - so I see updates available which I cannot use. Really not much SUMo can do about this since all information it uses is pulled from file tags. It relies on the developers creating proper tag info.

I have previously made some requests which may eventually help to some degree - like being able to set upper/lower version number limits for specific product entries - but even then this may always be an issue in some cases.
Kyle_Katarn 2008-08-05 08:30 Zer0 Voltage is right. I recommend to "Ignore" hardware-related tools as manufacturers often do nasty things with version numbers, making SUMo unable to track such product correctly.
636 New Feature minor always 2008-07-26 10:08 2008-08-01 16:50 Zer0 Voltage normal closed none none won't fix 0 Allow Users to Ignore Individual Product Entries for Any Program Found in Multiple Locations I have noticed that SUMo (2.0.0.50) has an "all or nothing" attitude towards ignoring products which have the exact same name - even if they are located in different directories and have different version numbers.

That means if the same product is located in more than one directory, you cannot specifically chose to ignore some locations while monitoring others. You must either monitor them all or ignore them all. And if you do try to ignore one, all others will become ignored after SUMo is restarted.

A common example of this is with Java (which shows as "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" in the Product column). As you install new versions, the older versions are left behind for potential compatibility reasons - but they are [normally] stored in different locations.

So right now, I have the latest version in "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\java.exe" - but there are also older versions in "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\java.exe", "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\java.exe", etc.

For each of those java.exe files, I [initially] see a unique separate "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" Product entry in SUMo. But I really only want to monitor the latest version, so I select the others one by one and choose to ignore them - finally leaving only the one entry for the latest version. But if I then restart SUMo, that one remaining entry is also automatically added to the ignore list (even though I never actually selected to ignore it).

Then when looking at the ignore list, all of those Java entries are merged together and you only see one Product entry for all of them. So I assume SUMo is thinking that all "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" entries are the same - even though they really aren't.

My suggestion is that every file should be considered a unique and separate entity when found in different locations (even if the names and/or version numbers in the file tags are exactly the same). That way users can pick and choose which specific ones to monitor and/or ignore.

Thanks!

522 Bug minor N/A 2008-03-23 23:42 2008-05-28 19:55 Zer0 Voltage Kyle_Katarn normal closed none none not fixable 0 Product Version Determination Issues There are multiple specific issues relating to the Symantec AntiVirus and Symantec Endpoint Protection products - and these specific issues demonstrate some more general potential problems with how SUMo works.

First, take a look at the following "Get Updates" page:

http://kcsofts.dyndns.org/sumo/view.php?uid=36739523&ProductName=Symantec%20AntiVirus&Company=Symantec%20Corporation [^]

That page shows various version 8, 9, 10, and 11 releases of what SUMo believes are all Symantec AntiVirus.

The first problem is that only the version 8 through 10 entries truly represent Symantec AntiVirus (specifically the "Corporate Edition"). The version 11 products are actually reports from people using the newer and separate Symantec Endpoint Protection product.

Take a look at the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition page here:

http://www.symantec.com/business/products/overview.jsp?pcid=2241&pvid=805_1 [^]

and you'll see a message towards the top that the 11.x products are actually Symantec Endpoint Protection.

I have also attached screenshots showing SAV 10.x and SEP 11.x panels with version info.

What happened here is that Symantec screwed up on the executable for SEP. SAV 10.x uses VPC32.exe and the description tag properly says "Symantec AntiVirus". SEP 11.x, however, uses SymCorpUI.exe - but they forgot to change the description tag and it still incorrectly says "Symantec AntiVirus" by mistake.

I'm not sure what you can do in a case like this, but it does show a more general problem of how SUMo can easily be fooled or confused by incorrect version info tags.

Also further complicating things, the Symantec AntiVirus version 10.2.x code is specifically for Windows Vista only. It cannot even be installed on anything older. XP (or previous OS) users can only run 10.1.x versions (or older) while Vista users cannot run the 10.1.x code at all. See the related KB article here:

http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/854fa02b4f5013678825731a007d06af/d4282b064b6dff038825735c005d84ca?OpenDocument [^]

So if an XP user has SAV 10.1.x installed, SUMo thinks 10.2.x and 11.x are available updates - but they are not. And this and similar situations can generate user confusion.

Again, this demonstrates another more generic SUMo issue I'm just not sure how to address - specific version strains which are intended for specific OS versions yet use the same version info tags.

The last issue is that even if all the version details for SAV were correct, SUMo still shows the wrong version as the latest. It thinks 11.0.777 is the latest, but 11.0.1002 would be (if that was actually SAV to begin with ;) ). This implies SUMo is thinking .7x is greater than .1x when in fact it should be thinking "1002" is greater than "777" - and that implies other packages may have similar version analysis problems.

Thanks!
SAV10.jpg (86 KB) 2008-03-23 23:42
SEP11.jpg (148 KB) 2008-03-23 23:43
Kyle_Katarn 2008-05-26 23:35 Is it still a problem with v1.8.x ?
Zer0 Voltage 2008-05-28 06:23 Technically it's still a problem because the underlying issue is that Symantec is using the same tags on the main executable files for both Symantec AntiVirus and Symantec Endpoint Protection even though they are different products (by which I mean SEP 11.x is not really just an update to SAV 10.x).

This was one of the reasons I suggested adding a feature to allow users to set version ranges for specific programs here:

http://kcsofts.dyndns.org/mantis/view.php?id=539 [^]

With such a feature, Symantec AntiVirus users could just set their maximum range to 10.x and not see the false information generated by Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.x.

I suppose the logical thing to do is close this bug report and consider it eventually covered by that other feature request I submitted.

Thanks!

By this I mean that version numbers in the format of A.B or A.B.C work fine, but anything in the format A.B.C.D, A.B.C.D.E, and so on, will not work if only D, E, etc., changes.

SUMo will understand these version numbers locally and they will appear properly in the "Version" column. But when SUMo does a check, anything with more than 2 decimals gets truncated to the A.B.C format and this means the update notice will be wrong if only something after the third decimal has changed. If fact, everything which uses more than 2 decimals is truncated to the A.B.C format in the "Update" column on checks.

Perhaps the most common program that has this problem would be Firefox which uses an A.B.C.D version format. As I type this, the current [non-beta] release is 2.0.0.13. So if for example you have version 2.0.0.12, SUMo will falsely believe that no [non-beta] update is available.

Take a look at the Firefox "Get Update" page to see this:

http://kcsofts.dyndns.org/sumo/view.php?ProductName=Firefox&Company=Mozilla%20Corporation [^]

It lists a large number of people running 2.0.0 when actually those people are all running various 2.0.0.x versions. But since SUMo only recognizes two decimals, it incorrectly thinks all 2.0.0.x versions are the same.

This is probably a pretty significant issue considering the entire purpose of SUMo is to alert users to updates. :)

Thanks!
Kyle_Katarn 2008-03-30 09:55 This is "as per design" due to the datamodel I chose for SUMo.

Upon launch, I see a "Loading..." pop-up window open over the SUMo program window and am locked out until this scan completes.

I assume it is at least checking for any missing programs since I have gotten a message after this scan whenever I've uninstalled something. I don't know if it is also checking for anything newly added though.

But regardless of what this scan does, it can create a significant delay - especially on systems with hundreds of programs installed.

And for people like me who also prefer to start SUMo manually, this can be even more annoying - particularly if I only want to quickly check on something specific (like a single program) or do any sort of test.

So my request is for an option to suppress this startup scan - something like "Do Not Automatically Scan on SUMo Startup" (or whatever you would prefer).

In the case where someone disables that startup scan and then performs a full check of all programs and SUMo comes across something missing, you can always just display the same "Unable to load the following files" message about that after the check completes.

And if that startup scan also checks for new programs, users who disable it would simply need to accept that they will have to manually scan to get anything new they install.

Thanks!
Kyle_Katarn 2008-03-24 10:17 In fact there is no "Automatic Scan" at startup, just the database loading (in order to check if installed products have been upgraded since lst execution)

Do you want an "Auto-scan" to replace this ? (in order to detect newly installed products too)
Zer0 Voltage 2008-03-24 19:26 Ouch... If that's just the database loading I'm not sure what to suggest.

Certainly I wouldn't also want an auto-scan because that would take even longer (though it would be harmless to offer that as an option if you want).

If there is any way to just have the program immediately start without any significant delays, that's what I would recommend.

On my desktop system with 687 programs, it sometimes takes 5-10 minutes just to load that list during startup! That's an incredibly long wait if you just want to do something quick.

Any check for upgrades or removals could be limited to when an actual full scan or check is done (or even a partial one - like for an individual program).

Perhaps the program list could be stored as a single snapshot of some sort? Then you could just replace that snapshot whenever a scan or check is run?

I would also think if you just immediately loaded the list without doing any upgrade checks (or anything else) it should start faster to - and if so, this could then be an option.

Sorry, but not being a developer myself I can't come up with any better ideas. :(

Thanks!
